This is not at all the kind of news I like to share, I’d rather bury my head in the sand when it comes to stuff like this, but I’ve learned that I need to acknowledge the bad stuff too. So here we go: According to a new study, people with diabetes have a greater risk of developing alzheimers disease.
In the study, which included more than 1,000 men and women over age 60, researchers found that people with diabetes were twice as likely as the other study participants to develop Alzheimer’s disease within 15 years. They were also 1.75 times more likely to develop dementia of any kind.
My grandmother has dementia and I know from watching her, that this is no way to die. The up side of this study is that the increased risk seems to relate to high blood sugars so if you can keep your sugars under control, maybe you will imporve your odds. Let’s hope so!
