Diabetes and Bullying

I got an email from Diabetes UK asking me to share this video about type 1 diabetes and bullying. It’s a great, short video about teenagers teasing a classmate. It’s interesting too because this is something I haven’t heard or read much about….I guess I was fortunate because I didn’t experience bullying (related to my diabetes anyway), my friends were more often curious or else wanting me to share my snacks. I don’t know if times have changed or if I was just lucky.

Check it out, it’s called Setting the Record Straight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8_OPMvLsRM&feature=channel

  1. I actually did get a number of these comments- the “you brought this on yourself”, the “shooting-up”, and the “druggie” comments specifically. Maybe I was lucky that this kind of bullying happened in public h.s., which was otherwise good for me socially and had low bullying tolerance, and not in the private middle school I attended, in which I was actually *really* bullied for non-diabetes-related stuff (bullies there were invisible to the administration so long as they had money). I was able to handle it better. Sad, isn’t it?

    • Yeah, I’d love to hear more from others because the diabetes related bullying really came as a surprise to me. I am of course familiar with all kinds of other bullying but not specific to diabetes, interesting! Thanks for your thoughts.
