The UPS man just dropped off a big box from Simon and Schuster on my front door filled with copies of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Power Moms: 101 stories celebrating the power of Choice for Stay at Home and Work from Home Moms. I wasn’t even sure they were going to use my essay. I’m thrilled! My essay is titled Metamorphosis and is about the time in my life when my first son was born and I was struggling to figure out a way I could quit my job and stay at home with him. If everything happens for a reason (which I tend to believe it does) then my grandfather’s death soon after the end of maternity leave was a gift from above because he left me some money, enough to quit. And I’ve never looked back. I don’t talk about my grandfather and the money in the essay, I talk about my struggle to justify wanting to stay home. It’s something I still struggle with everyday, now that the money is long gone and we live paycheck to paycheck……but I still believe that I wouldn’t have it any other way.
